"It is meaningless to repeat the past technology, and we should pursue theoretical breakthroughs and innovation" - discussing CCID on the occasion of the release of the low-carbon steel service platform

"If today, we are still repeating the technology of the past is meaningless, there must be a theoretical breakthrough and innovation, in order to be able to take a place in the future low-carbon development competition." On July 9, during the 2024 Annual meeting of the Steel Industry Low-carbon Work Promotion Committee and the Seminar on Green and low-carbon development of the steel industry, the reporter of China Metallurgical News interviewed CCID, the participant of the steel low-carbon service platform.

The platform is guided by the construction of the Steel Association and the construction of CCID, which can provide three major plate services. First, accounting services, that is, the platform has independently developed relevant carbon accounting model tools, which can provide convenient, accurate and authoritative online carbon emissions accounting and analysis services, help steel enterprises to find out their own carbon emissions, and benchmark the rules of different countries and regions in the world. The second is information services, that is, to provide the most complete and latest policies, information, standards, low-carbon technology and other information, and through intelligent engine, algorithm extraction and other technologies to mine the most valuable information, provide intelligent questions and answers and other services to support enterprises to scientifically reduce carbon. The third is ecological services, that is, the platform has built a database of experts to create a low-carbon development ecosystem for the industry, and will further integrate the advantages of the industry, share resources, create value, and jointly promote the green low-carbon transformation of the steel industry.

What is the point of releasing a platform at this point? As one of the technical group leaders of the steel industry low-carbon work Promotion Committee, what are the original intentions and experiences of CCID participating in the platform construction? During the meeting, Xiao Peng, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and general manager of MCC CCID Group Co., LTD., started from the platform construction and talked about the understanding and efforts of MCC CCID for the "double carbon" work.

Carbon accounting is related to international competition in the steel industry

"Under the organization of the Steel Association, CCID led by all parties, after more than 1 year, carefully researched and tested, and jointly created this steel low-carbon service platform." In Xiao Peng's view, the steel industry urgently needs such a platform.

On the one hand, there is responsibility and incompetence. As a typical resource and energy-intensive industry, the steel industry contributes more than 15% of the national carbon emissions and more than 60% of the global steel industry's total carbon emissions. Green low-carbon transformation is urgent and duty-bound. However, the steel industry faces problems such as weak carbon emissions accounting foundation and lack of capacity, and it is urgent to build a systematic and professional service platform.

"The biggest value of the platform is the independent development of relevant carbon accounting model tools, all steel enterprises can be on the platform, in accordance with the corresponding national standards for exports for free carbon emissions accounting, saving the process of studying the calculation details." Xiao Peng said that enterprises only need to provide relevant data, and the system will automatically calculate carbon emissions data.

On the other hand, the need to obtain fair competition conditions. At present, the world has ISO standards, CBAM and other low carbon standards issued by different organizations, but in Xiao Peng's view, the world has a unified standard will be the future trend, "this is the needs of economic development, trade and logistics development, but also the need for fair competition under the same standard system."

"The platform ensures information security through keys, and all data is managed by the Steel Association." Xiao Peng stressed that "the steel association has the most credibility in the domestic steel industry, and it will be more convincing for the platform to guide the construction of the platform and provide carbon emission certification documents."

In addition, as one of the technical group leaders of the steel industry low-carbon work Promotion Committee, CCID is also duty-bound, and will continue to strengthen research in the future to promote the platform to meet international standards and win common recognition, which is very important for Chinese steel enterprises to obtain fair competition conditions.

Original technological breakthroughs are imperative

At present, there are many kinds of carbon reduction technology paths for the future, and many energy saving and carbon reduction technologies are also very mature, but they increase the cost and do not create benefits. "We want to find some original technology that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and reduce the cost of the entire economy, which is very difficult." Xiao Peng said.

At present, MCC CCID continues to cultivate deeply in the field of original technology and has achieved remarkable results.

First, efficient reduction of 3R low carbon blast furnace technology. Efficient reduction of 3R hydrogen blast furnace in Hebei Vertical and Steel to achieve the first set of application breakthrough, continuous stable operation has been more than 12 months, selected in 2023 world steel top ten technical news, the cost of hot metal can be reduced by 10 yuan/ton iron ~30 yuan/ton iron. "It has an impact far beyond the project itself, because it has found a practical technical solution to a traditional long process toward an intermediate path of continuous carbon reduction." Xiao Peng said.

The second is HYRIF amino shaft furnace. In 2023, the focus will be on strengthening the development of hydrogen-based shaft furnace process optimization, core equipment, control type, etc., combining the integration of original technology and mature technology, further stabilizing the CISDIHYRIF process flow, realizing the localization of core equipment, solving the problem of autonomy and control of core equipment, and completing the basic engineering design of shaft furnace on the scale of millions of tons. It has the conditions for engineering application. "In mid-July, the pilot base for this technology will be put into operation." "It is expected that the comprehensive energy consumption of this project will be about 15 percent lower than the current world's most advanced technology, and the production efficiency is expected to be greatly improved," Xiao said.

The third is green super arc furnace technology. Ccid has built a new generation of super electric arc furnace with completely independent intellectual property rights, and has realized core technologies such as new flexible direct current (IGBT) power supply technology + step charging + strengthened scrap preheating, and the smelting cost of electric furnace steel is reduced by 100 yuan/ton ~120 yuan/ton compared with the international advanced level.

Xiao Peng said that the development of low-carbon technology in China's steel industry needs more research institutions and enterprises to collaborate on innovation, and under the guidance of the government, to build a working mechanism of multi-party collaboration, joint investment and risk sharing, in order to promote more original technological breakthroughs.
